First Sunday Message

On Sunday we talked about the new theme for the year "Strengthening our families and our marriages". We are going to focus on a different goal each month that plays a part in helping to accomplish strengthening our families and marriages.
I passed out an anonymous survey a few weeks ago. 36 sisters took the survey. The survey asked how often you 1. read scriptures as a family, 2. Family prayers, 3. Family Home Evening, 4. Go on dates with your spouse and 5. Church attendance. We went over those results on Sunday.
If you weren't in class and are interested in all the results let me know and I can email them to you.
Out of 36 families only 6 families (16%) read their scriptures everyday. Way to go you 6 families!
Our goal this month is to do better with our scripture study as a family. We want everyone to aim high and try to get this a part of your every day routine with your families. Create lasting habits this year. Each individual family will set their own goal with scripture study. We will have incentives with each of our goals. If you accomplished your goal for the week, then you put your name in the envelope in the binders. At the end of February we will draw out a name and have a prize for you! So if you accomplish your goal each week you could have your name in the drawing 3 times this month.

We split up into groups of 4 sisters and discussed our successes and failures in establishing scripture study in our homes. We then had each group share. The conclusion was to make it a habit and part of your everyday routine. It then becomes easier once established as "routine". IDEAS Shared: Some homes wake up really early to read, others read before bed. Some start out with a prayer and a song. One family gives treats to those that are on time to scripture study to make it "fun". One family holds up pictures from the gospel art kit and read about those stories. You need to find out which works for your family!

As teachers our goals should be to 1. teach key doctrine 2. invite learners to do the work God has for them, and 3. promise that blessings will surely come. (Teaching helps save Lives, Osguthorpe)

Their is much doctrine about scripture study. Nephi often talks about the joy and blessings he received from the scripture and this talk by Sister Beck, "My Soul Delighteth in the Scriptures" has many ideas and tips on helping it become a habit.
I passed around bookmarks that contain promises and blessing that come from reading the scriptures. If you did not get one we will get you one on Sunday.

Questions about the goal this month? Email me or leave a comment on the blog. Thanks!
Jen
